Deflower is a diary of the experiences of the artist’s past relationships while exploring some questions: What is love in a pandemic? What is natural love vs love that is questionable? Who is at fault or not?
During the height of the COVID-19 Virus Pandemic Era artist Jynx Prado was reminded about the swift nature of pandemics that have been endured throughout history including the AIDS Crisis that impacted many queer lives to this day. As of 2023 COVID-19 has dwindled from its impact but the bigotry against queer lives continues furiously and has spread across the United States. The video piece is now more of a bad omen awaiting queer lives with an uncertain future after the pandemic.
Socializing during the pandemic was more on reading eyes and body language due to the masks that had to be worn. When it comes to affection people tend to avoid getting physically close even to close friends but I wondered how that experience would be with a mask on to a fragile flower. The flowers I used were different bouquets that were being sold from street vendors during the month of February to use the best kind of flowers that were used for romantic relationships. The masks that I wore during the pandemic and romantic driven flowers was the combination needed to create the piece.
